The Applied Image Processing Resource Unit (AIPRU)

Main contact: Dr. Graeme Awcock

AIPRU:

Image processing within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Brighton encompasses final year studies at undergraduate level, specialist short courses, and postgraduate research programs. The Applied Image Processing Resource Unit (AIPRU) encourages the development of industrial machine vision systems focusing on low-cost, real-time systems and applications. A theme of much of its work is real-time visual inspection and image recognition.

Research activities over the past decade have spanned much of the machine-vision domain including hardware architectures, sensors and algorithms. The majority of research is directed by practical applications which require cost-effective solutions particularly within the electronics and paper-manufacturing industries.

The philosophy of the research unit is to support a systemic approach to machine vision in order to minimise the complexity and cost of machine-vision solutions. In particular, developments in vision-implementation frameworks and image sensors are widely applicable to industry at large. Specific analysis and developments, such as ink-particle inspection, present transfer possibilities in other areas of manufacturing.

Industrial contacts are continually sought in all areas of practical machine-vision implementation. Collaborators are required to assist taught courses, promote consultancy and to develop research programmes. At the present time we are seeking specific users for a second-generation, smart-sensor device which is particularly suitable for high-speed, low-resolution applications.

Facilities and Services:
  • Dedicated image-processing laboratory.
  • PC-based, image-processing workstations.
  • Industry-standard, image-processing software (VISILOG) and custom teaching environments.
  • Short courses available to industry on the principles and applications of image processing.
  • Industrial support and collaboration via: consultancy, student projects, teaching-company schemes or
  • ostgraduate research programmes.

Latest AIPRU News:
  • Ray Thomas & Graeme Awcock have written a book, entitled "Applied Image Processing", which has been publishedby Macmillan. This text is intended to be a practical introduction to machine vision, image processing and their applications.
  • AIPRU has just obtained a 3-D imaging system suitable for use in a number of medical applications, for example, surgery for facial reconstruction. The value of the equipment is approximately £30,000.
